Several months ago Exxon had a Shareholder's meeting, 6 anti-pollution measures were presented for a vote, they were all defeated. Why is it a choice to stop pouring chemicals into our air and water, why isn't it mandatory? No business has the right to affect other people without their consent, no one has the right to dump their poisons right into people's backyards and lungs. It should be mandatory to install efficient, practical pollution control systems, any time that the business is emitting foul chemicals into the air.
I lived in Baytown and got to experience, firsthand, what happens when Exxon lets its stacks loose. A yellow gum that the car wash can't remove in two passes covers every vehicle, think what it's like for your lungs. My sister moved to Atascocita just before Hurricane Ike, she and her 8 children get sick less than 1/2 of what they did living in Baytown. I just don't think that it's just coincidence.
Wasn't it bad enough that Geo W Bush abused his Presidential Authority to remove the EPA mandate to install pollution control systems? He said it would put undue financial stress on Exxon and other big business to make them follow the mandate. Exxon made more money last year than any company in the history of the world. Their CEO was paid $184,000,000 dollar salary and got a $186,000,000 bonus. For what, he had been there less than 2 years and inherited this business already making more money than all but 14 countries. And the one before him got a $398,000,000 pension. Between the two of them it is 3/4 of a billion dollars a year, sure, that's not gonna affect gas prices.
Add to that the last ruling on the Exxon Valdez, where a Federal Court said Exxon did not have to honor its commitment to reimburse citizens whose livelihood was totally destroyed by that totally avoidable accident. The real shame is that the average citizen's loss of income was $70,000/year and they were only paid $17,000 total. Yet, the CEO made $350,000,000 to play golf and tell his department heads to keep doing what they always do, nothing new, just status quo. Maybe it would have been better to sue the persons in charge instead of the company. Finally, to top it off, Exxon and several other Petroleum Companies were found guilty of price gouging when they raised the price of gasoline afterward, and got only a slap on the wrist. I would like to know just how much extra money they made in the gouge, because I'm sure that after that ruling Exxon actually turned a profit from the accident.
I use Exxon as an example because they are the most extreme company when it comes to abuse of capitalism and ethics, criminal trade practices and buying the patents for anything that would decrease the dependence on poisonous, out-dated fossil fuels. One of the things that brings me great joy about "the Plan", is that if we implement it, in 10 years Exxon (and all petrochemical companies) will become nothing more than a solvents, lubricants, and plastics company.

We must make keeping the world sustainable a #1 priority, it is suicidal and colossally stupid to poison your food and water supply, as well as, you and your children. There is an old saying, "You don't sh%* where you eat", wish everyone still understood that bit of wisdom. No one can make the argument that pollution and harmful chemicals are good for you. No one can make the argument that the benefits of convenience or profit is more important than life, health, and a future. Not one shareholder, employee, or management of a polluting company would allow someone to pipe the waste from their plant directly into their neighborhood or house, gaseous or liquid. So why do we accept this from them, I thought the People ruled this country.
We must clean up our act so that we give as pristine a world as possible to our children.
