Recycling

I think that recycling is the one subject that everyone understands and virtually everyone agrees is a good idea.  We all know that "disposable" is a misnomer, we don't actually throw anything away, we just move it somewhere else.  Any resource we pull from the earth must be replenished, organic can regrow, but inorganic must be replaced.  Recycling is the only way to be able to use the basic resources, forever.

Some cities have instituted fairly comprehensive recycling programs, but doing something part-way is inefficient and unproductive.  We need to change our daily routines to better serve the needs of the citizens of Texas and to recycle everything that can reasonably be recycled.  From every level of government, to business, to private citizen, we need to adopt better ways of recapturing the resources we consume every day.

The best way to implement this plan is to break down our waste into different categories; i.e., organic, metal, glass, paper and wood, plastic, electronic, and "all other".  Most of the categories are already being recycled, to one extent or the other, we just need to do it for all of them, and do it all the way.

Organic refuse can be used as fertilizer for both personal and community use.  Plastic must be able to be recycled or broken down for every type of plastic we use.  Electronics carry their own set of problems and we are both helping our environment and protecting our people by properly reclaiming all usable parts and detoxifying the remainder.  I'm not even sure what will go into "All Other", but we will need to asses what materials it is comprised of and how best to reclaim or dispose of it.

Nothing presented here is impossible, radical, or even new, our only obstacle is getting everyone to adopt these practices.  We have different entities from businesses to governmental agencies that have instituted similar plans and are having a fair amount of success.  It is time now to make this a reality throughout all of Texas.
